Mediterranean permaculture and climate resilience
Mediterranean climates reward observation. Long dry summers, concentrated rain, heat, wind, and fire risk make timing and context as important as technique.
Resilience is not a single intervention
It is tempting to look for the one feature that solves drought, fire, fertility, biodiversity, or food production. Mediterranean design rarely works like that. Resilience is usually built through connected decisions: soil cover, water movement, shade, species choice, access, maintenance, fuel management, storage, social capacity, and realistic phasing.
Permaculture helps by asking how these decisions affect each other. A pond, swale, tree belt, animal system, composting plan, or garden layout may be useful in one context and unsuitable in another.
Key design questions
- Where does water arrive, slow down, soak in, overflow, or leave?
- Which areas need shade, wind moderation, access, or defensible space?
- How will soil be protected during both drought and heavy rain?
- What maintenance is realistic in the hottest and busiest parts of the year?
- Which claims need local evidence before they become design decisions?
Designing with uncertainty
Climate resilience is not about pretending to predict every future condition. It is about designing systems that can be monitored, adjusted, repaired, and learned from. That means small trials, feedback, redundancy, clear stop conditions, and honest limits are part of good design.
