Tom Henfrey
Reflection, resilience and the courage to transform
Tom Henfrey was my principal Diploma tutor and one of the most important influences on the development of my permaculture practice. He helped me move from applying familiar design skills to trusting permaculture as an organic process capable of producing outcomes I had not already decided upon.
Distinctive contribution
Tom combines practical permaculture with research into resilience, climate adaptation and community-led transformation. His academic work treats permaculture as more than a collection of techniques: it can operate as a transdisciplinary methodology connecting formal research, community action, ecological knowledge and lived experimentation.
Key drivers and guiding ideas
In tutorials, Tom repeatedly returned me to process, evaluation and reflection. He encouraged me to distinguish using design to justify a preferred solution from allowing the solution to emerge through observation and analysis. He also pressed for greater attention to social and cultural factors, post-implementation evidence, and learning that could be carried from one design into the next.

Influence on my work
His question in my silviculture work, ‘Transform or tweak?’, prompted a deeper distinction. A tweak adjusts an existing form; transformation can change function, relationship and identity. Yet repeated responsive tweaks can also become the path to transformation. That insight influenced Design 8 and the wider Action Learning Pathway. Tom also helped me see the ten Diploma designs as a nested and interconnected portfolio rather than ten separate performances.
My critical reading
A good tutor does not supply the apprentice’s conclusions. Tom’s influence is visible precisely because the work remained mine. His questions made assumptions visible, demanded clearer evidence and opened directions I might otherwise have missed. That is a model of teaching I want the Academy to carry forward.
