Understanding and Respect for Nature

What this tenet means

In The Mă-Kè Bonsai Way, understanding is always partial and respect is practical. It means observing species behaviour, seasonal rhythms, vigour, roots, water, weather and the response to previous work. It also means accepting that a desired form may be unsuitable for the tree in front of us.

How it works in practice

• Identify the species and learn its horticultural requirements.
• Observe before making irreversible changes.
• Work with growth habit and season rather than a fixed template.
• Record uncertainty and seek specialist help where identification or health is unclear.
• Consider the materials, water and ecological effects around the tree.

Questions for reflection

1. What is the tree showing now?
2. Which observations are direct, and which are assumptions?
3. What does this species and season permit?
4. What could be learned through a smaller, reversible action?

Relationship with permaculture ethics and principles

Mark later re-examined this tenet through permaculture ethics, particularly Earth Care and the principle of observing and interacting. The relationship is an authored interpretation. The tenet is not presented as a universal permaculture ethic.

Evidence and development

Design 01 records the tenet in the Mă-Kè philosophy and describes the later integration of permaculture. The controlled appendix gives the six-tenet wording. Royal Horticultural Society guidance supports species-specific and seasonal care, but does not validate the Mă-Kè philosophy itself.

Limitations and cautions

Respectful language does not guarantee sound horticulture. Trees can be harmed by poor identification, unsuitable timing, excessive pruning, root work or inadequate aftercare. This page is an ethical and reflective guide, not species-specific instruction.
