Each Element Performs Many Functions
Choose and arrange elements so each contributes several compatible benefits without concealing care or conflict.
Definition and orientation
This principle asks a designer to seek several useful, compatible functions from each chosen element. A tree might provide food, shade, shelter, biomass and habitat; a path may also guide runoff or define access. The point is not to burden every element with an arbitrary target, but to recognise and deliberately support useful roles.
Practical meaning: For each candidate element, list inherent characteristics before assigning functions. Distinguish dependable functions from possible co-benefits, identify who maintains them, and test whether one role compromises another. Prefer elements whose functions answer real site needs and remain legible to the people responsible.

- Are the proposed functions compatible in place and time?

Design 08 records fencing for livestock rotation, tree guards and irrigation infrastructure and explicitly labels the infrastructure choice as Each Element Performs Many Functions. The record supports multifunctional intent and installed basic infrastructure; it does not establish that every component delivered every anticipated function over time.

Limits, critiques and common misuse
- Inventing decorative function lists after an element has already been chosen.
- Expecting one element to perform critical work without backup.
- Ignoring trade-offs between roles, such as access and habitat protection.
- Counting a possible benefit as a measured result.
No principle replaces consent, law, competent technical advice, ecological assessment or accountable maintenance. Where principles pull in different directions, make the tension visible rather than selecting only the phrase that supports an existing preference.
