Relative Location directs attention to the connections made possible by placement. An element is located well when its needs can be met, its useful outputs can serve other elements, travel and maintenance remain proportionate, and conflicts or hazards are managed. Nearness alone is not integration: timing, direction, capacity and governance also shape the relationship.
Practical meaning: Begin with the functions and flows rather than a favourite object. Describe what each candidate element needs, produces, attracts, blocks and changes. Map frequency of use, water, wind, sun, access, fire and social boundaries; then compare placements. Test the most consequential relationship on the ground before fixing infrastructure.

- Which needs and outputs could be connected by placement?
- What work, loss or risk changes with distance and direction?
