Definition and orientation
Small-Scale Intensive Systems favours compact, carefully organised production where space, time and vertical layers are used deliberately. Intensive should mean information-, relationship- and care-intensive rather than chemically or extractively intensive. Scale remains relative to the function, ecology and available skill.
Practical meaning: Start with a bounded area linked to a real need. Stack compatible layers, seasons and functions only where access, soil, water and maintenance support them. Elsewhere the register locates the phrase on PDF page 53, but that passage describes Geoff Lawton’s teaching rather than demonstrating a Vila Pinheiro result.
