Definition and orientation

OBREDIM names a structured movement through observation, boundaries, resources, evaluation, design, implementation and maintenance. OBREDIMET makes later evaluation and tweaking explicit. Goal-led variants add an opening G, while practitioner spellings and stage expansions vary.

The important lesson is lineage rather than acronym competition: later versions inherit a process, expose additional responsibilities and sometimes adapt its emphasis.

Origins, lineage and attribution

Practitioner sources describe OBREDIM as a standard core and OBREDIMET as an extension. Goal-led forms circulated before Mark’s Diploma. Mark’s annexure discusses the evolution into the version he used for food self-sufficiency. The master register corrects its source label from GOBRADIME to GOBRADIMET and identifies the final T as Tracking.

Ethical and principle context

Goals and boundaries should make purpose, affected interests and limits visible. Resources must include labour, knowledge, time and ecological capacity, not only materials. Tracking should follow unintended effects and care obligations as well as planned outputs.

  1. State goals and ethical boundaries.
  2. Observe before assuming the system boundary.
  3. Inventory resources, dependencies and constraints.
  4. Analyse relationships and evaluate evidence.
  5. Generate and compare designs.
  6. Implement proportionately and maintain explicitly.
  7. Evaluate outcomes and track change over time.

Application in Mark’s Diploma and at Vila Pinheiro

Design 06 uses GOBRADIMET for food self-sufficiency at Vila Pinheiro, with evidence on PDF pages 3, 5 and 63 and a dedicated annexure. The design’s presence in Mark’s work supports application, not authorship. The framework helped connect food requirements, site inventory, water, labour, biodiversity and implementation planning.

Limits, critiques and common misuse

  • Acronym variation can create false certainty about stages and origin.
  • A long sequence may appear linear even though evaluation should trigger returns.
  • Tracking indicators can narrow attention if qualitative and unexpected effects are excluded.
  • The family’s distributed practitioner history still requires further archival research.

Where this material comes from

This family of permaculture design-process acronyms developed and changed through practitioner and Diploma networks. The principal record combines practitioner documentation, Gaia University-linked design-process teaching and Mark D’Cruz’s Design 06 annexure. The family is cumulative and variable, and published expansions do not always agree on every letter or final stage. OBREDIM, OBREDIMET, GOBREDIMET and GOBRADIMET all appear in the evidence; this Library retains the spelling used in Mark’s final design while explaining alternatives. Mark selected and applied GOBRADIMET in Design 06, but did not coin GoSADIMET, OBREDIM or GOBRADIMET. The family relationship and Mark’s application are supported, while a definitive single-author origin is not asserted.
