What Makes a Useful Permaculture Design Framework?
Assess a design framework through ethics, evidence, participation, iteration, implementation, maintenance and adaptation rather than acronym alone.
Definition and orientation
A useful framework gives a design enough structure to remain ethical, evidence-led and accountable while allowing the work to respond to living conditions. Its value is not the cleverness of its acronym. The test is whether people can use it to understand context, generate and compare designs, implement responsibly, maintain what they create and learn from consequences.

Origins, lineage and attribution
The one-page appendix names ten properties: ethical foundation; holistic systems thinking; observation; energy efficiency and self-sufficiency; diversity and redundancy; adaptability; local appropriateness; soil and water care; resource cycles; and community and education. This Library guide retains that source while broadening the assessment to include scope, participation, design generation, implementation, maintenance, evaluation, accessibility and limitations.
Ethical and principle context
A framework should make ethics operational. That means asking who defines the purpose, who may be affected, how non-human life is represented, where consent or expertise is needed, and who will carry maintenance. An ethics paragraph at the beginning cannot compensate for an extractive process.
When and how to use it
- State the design purpose, scale, people, place and decision deadline.
- Map the framework’s stages against observation, analysis, design generation, implementation, maintenance and feedback.
- Check whether iteration is structurally possible rather than merely mentioned.
- Identify missing responsibilities, evidence and participation.
- Adapt openly, recording what was inherited and what changed.
- Choose the lightest framework that preserves accountability.
Application in Mark’s Diploma and at Vila Pinheiro
Mark used the synthesis while explaining and evaluating GODREAMET in Design 08. Across the Diploma he selected different processes for different designs: the Design Web for reflective and personal work, GADIE for course redesign, GoCEAPER for energy, PERMA-SADIMET for water, GOBRADIMET for food, GODREAMET for silviculture and GRAZER for animal systems. Variety is not itself evidence of quality; the value lies in explicit fit, application and review.
Limits, critiques and common misuse
- No checklist guarantees ethical or competent design.
- A comprehensive framework can overwhelm a small decision.
- An elegant sequence may disguise weak observation or participation.
- Framework stages are not proof that implementation occurred.
- Mark’s synthesis requires wider critical testing before any claim of general acceptance.
